The Sam and Stella Stout Memorial Woodland

It is with great joy that we announce to our members;  Red-tail Land Conservancy is at  long-last the owner and protector  of  Stout Woods.  This is a land project first brought to Red-tail thirteen years ago by  former board  member Randy Jones, pictured here at long last holding the deed.   The fate  of  the woods has taken many courses over the years, but now RLC holds title to this glorious Indiana State Nature Preserve.

Barry first walked these woods with Randy in 2000 when he insisted that RLC take on this land project.  It took only a few moments to see why he was so endeared to the woods in which he played as a child.  It is home to one of the most mature stands of hardwood trees in east central Indiana.  It has the complete package, hundreds of wildflower species, diverse woodland grasses, sedges and shrubs…and those glorious, mammoth hardwood trees.

It has been a long road with lots of turns, but thanks to the Stout family members, John Bacone (IDNR), and Dr. Laura Hare Charitable Trust, Red-tail acquired the funds to purchase the woods.  We will now partner with the Nature Preserve Division of Indiana Dept of Natural Resources to insure this splendid ecosystem will remain forever wild and pristine.
